Séminaire LRS | Michael Tsapatsis "Emerging strategies for nanoporous membrane, adsorbent and catalyst synthesis"

The LRS invites you to the occasion
of this Tour as an ambassador of the CNRS Institute de Chimie

Professor Michael Tsapatsis, from  Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore USA)

will present a seminar intitled

"Emerging Strategies for Nanoporous Membrane, Adsorbent, and Catalyst Synthesis"

Sorbonne Université Campus Pierre et Marie Curie Amphitheater 45A
Welcome coffee and tea at
10:30 in front of the lecture hall

Abstract : Most commercial nanoporous materials are based on zeolites, which have reached high technological maturity. With the paradigm shifts in energy, fuels, and chemicals production driven by urgent needs for decarbonization and sustainability, new membranes, adsorbents and catalysts will be needed for key roles in product purification, in feedstock fractionation, and for intensified chemical conversions and separations. In the last 20 years, research efforts on nanoporous materials like zeolites, metal organic frameworks (MOFs), and, more recently, covalent organic frameworks (COFs), graphenes/graphene oxides, and other 2D materials,  provided demonstrations of breakthrough performance exceeding that of currently available technologies. Major synthesis concepts that allowed these developments (e.g., nanoparticle/nanosheet assembly, solvent-free crystallization, nanocomposites, epitaxial growth, post-synthesis modifications) will be highlighted. Fundamental gaps in nanoporous materials synthesis and separation and catalytic performance and how can they be addressed to enable new manufacturing paradigms will be discussed.
