Characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles tracers for MRI by HR-MAS NMR spectroscopy

Résumé
Our laboratory is developping since many years iron oxide nanoparticles for MRI. Their synthesis includes the grafting of diverses molecules at the surface, to allow a better dispersibility in aqueous media or to target different pathologies in the context of molecular imaging.
A major challenge is therefore to be able to characterize the nanoparticle surface, and more particularly, to be able to attest of the covalent grafting of the different molecules at the surface. In this context, NMR is a very interesting tool but, considering the superparamagnetic character of iron oxide nanoparticles, classical NMR can not be used. Nevertheless, the magnetic susceptibility effects engendered by iron oxide nanoparticles can be mostly suppressed by the use of HR-MAS (high resolution magic angle spinning) NMR, so that well-resolved 1D and 2D spectra can be obtained1,2. Several studies will be presented to illustrate the benefits of HR-MAS for the characterization of iron oxide nanoparticles.
